Artist Statement: A Dialogue Between Earth and Sky

Saskia Boelsums views the landscape not as a static backdrop, but as a living, breathing entity in a constant state of flux. Her process is deeply immersive; she traverses the Dutch countryside under the weight of looming storms and shifting seasons, seeking the moment where the mundane transforms into the sublime.

Core Philosophies of Her Work:

  • The Painterly Aesthetic: While her medium is digital photography, Boelsums’ eye is that of a painter. She utilizes light and texture to evoke the dramatic chiaroscuro found in the works of masters like Ruysdael and Constable.
  • Environmental Awareness: Her images serve as both a celebration and a warning. By capturing the raw power of nature, the heavy clouds, the bowing trees, and the turbulent waters, she subtly addresses the fragility of the ecosystem and the looming threat of climate change.
  • The Emotional Landscape: For Boelsums, the external world is a reflection of internal states. Her compositions are designed to elicit a visceral response, inviting the viewer to feel the humidity of the mist and the pressure of the oncoming wind.

Through her lens, the traditional Dutch landscape is reimagined. It is no longer just a geographical location, but a universal stage where the elements perform an eternal, cinematic drama.
