A monochrome close-up portrait from the ESTRANGED series by Arjan Spannenburg, featuring a person in drag makeup emerging from lush foliage, symbolizing the intersection of nature and identity.

The ESTRANGED exhibition was specifically commissioned by Stadsmuseum Tongerlohuys to mark the observance of Coming Out Day 2024. The institutional selection of this series stems from its urgent social relevance, encapsulated by the partnership with the Art That Matters foundation. By positioning these works within the museum during a week dedicated to diversity and visibility, the curator emphasizes that the struggle for LGBTQ+ identity is not a peripheral issue but a central narrative that requires institutional recognition. The why of this exhibition lies in the necessity of providing a safe, high-culture environment for stories that are often marginalized, asserting that the vulnerability of queer youth is a subject of profound artistic and societal weight.

integrated in the museum

The museum integrated the ESTRANGED series into a curated programme of evening openings and theatrical performances to maximise its communal impact. Arjan Spannenburg’s technical approach uses stark, monochromatic Giclée prints to command the gallery space, forcing a direct confrontation between the viewer and the gaze of the subject. The methodology relies on the artist's ability to translate complex internal states—such as the feeling of being an outsider in one's own community—into a visual language that is both academic and accessible. This collaboration between the artist, the museum, and Art That Matters ensures that the aesthetic quality of the portraits serves a higher pedagogical purpose facilitating dialogue during a period of heightened social awareness.

Coming out and ESTRANGED

Coming Out Roosendaal 2024's centrepiece, ESTRANGED presents a rigorous collection of portraits documenting the search for self by LGBTQ+ adolescents. The exhibition comprises 23 carefully selected works depicting young individuals in moments of profound solitude and resilience. Hosted at Tongerlohuys, the presentation was enhanced by specialised events, including a drag makeup workshop and evening theatre collaborations, which contextualised the static images within a living, breathing celebration of queer culture. The inclusion of the ESTRANGED photobook allowed visitors to take the narrative beyond the museum walls, extending the reach of Spannenburg’s exploration into the fragile beauty of becoming oneself.

Photo Impression Description

The installation at Tongerlohuys leverages the museum's architectural sobriety to frame Spannenburg's portraits. The monochrome series creates a rhythmic sequence along the walls, where the absence of colour directs the viewer's focus towards the nuanced expressions of the subjects, reflecting the somber yet hopeful tone of the Coming Out Week.
