A monochrome close-up portrait from the ESTRANGED series by Arjan Spannenburg, featuring a person in drag makeup emerging from lush foliage, symbolizing the intersection of nature and identity.

The museum integrated the ESTRANGED series into a curated programme of evening openings and theatrical performances to maximise its communal impact. Arjan Spannenburg’s technical approach uses stark, monochromatic Giclée prints to command the gallery space, forcing a direct confrontation between the viewer and the gaze of the subject. The methodology relies on the artist's ability to translate complex internal states—such as the feeling of being an outsider in one's own community—into a visual language that is both academic and accessible. This collaboration between the artist, the museum, and Art That Matters ensures that the aesthetic quality of the portraits serves a higher pedagogical purpose: facilitating dialogue during a period of heightened social awareness.

Coming out and ESTRANGED

A rigorous collection of portraits documenting the search for self by LGBTQ+ adolescents is displayed as the centrepiece for Coming Out Roosendaal 2024. The exhibition comprises 23 carefully selected works that depict young individuals in moments of profound solitude and resilience. Hosted at Tongerlohuys, the presentation was augmented by specialised events, including a drag makeup workshop and evening theatre collaborations, which contextualised the static images within a living, breathing celebration of queer culture. The inclusion of the ESTRANGED photobook allowed visitors to carry the narrative beyond the museum walls, extending the reach of Spannenburg’s exploration into the fragile beauty of becoming oneself.
