SOLACE is the emotional climax of the triptych, representing a deep, layered form of enlightenment. As we move into this close-up perspective, the boyish figure becomes clearly defined, contrasted against the masked face of the protector.

This "Common Ground", both the physical sand and the emotional shared basis, is where the weight of fear and loneliness is finally exhaled. Spannenburg draws from his complex history with Islamic cultures, moving from the distance of a soldier to the intimacy of an artist. He acknowledges the fear he felt as a gay man, yet chooses to find a sanctuary within the very symbols that once represented the unknown.

"I recognize the parallels in our struggles; I understand how often Muslim communities face discrimination, much like the LGBTQ+ community. Through my close friendships within the Muslim community, I have learned that it is more than possible to be embraced beyond our differences. We find each other on common ground."

This work is a masterclass in tension and relief; the heavy, dark fabric acts as a shroud for sorrow, allowing the light to highlight the tenderness of the skin.
